Advisor Announcements/Updates

Welcome back!

Student organizations that were recognized in 2007-2008 must renew their on-campus status by September 30, 2008.

Are you a continuing faculty/staff advisor who has already attended orientation in 07-08? If yes, you do not need to attend orientation again this year. Any new policy updates will be posted here on our Web site. Please check in monthly for any related changes. If you are unsure of your orientation attendance status, please contact Bill Mackey at bmackey@mail.sdsu.edu to verify your last date of attendance.

Are you applying to serve as a new faculty/staff advisor? If yes, you MUST attend an orientation session.

Advisors must be part time or full time employees of SDSU; employee eligibility is verified when organizations apply for on-campus status. Auxiliary staff and student assistants are not eligible to serve advisors.

Advisor Eligibility

All student organizations are required to have an eligible on-campus SDSU staff or faculty advisor. Advisor’s must be either part-time or full-time employees. Auxiliary staff and student assistants are not eligible to serve as advisors. Employee eligibility and confirmation of their status is verified when organizations apply for official recognition status. The advisor must also attend a mandatory advisor orientation. The advisor is an integral part of the organization, and he or she should be someone who is familiar with your group’s area of interest or mission.

Overview of Roles and Responsibility

The advisor:

  1. Serves as an advisor and guide
  2. Is aware of the policies and procedures for student organizations contained in this handbook and knows university policy affecting such groups; also ensures that the student leaders of the organization are informed of these policies.
  3. Is aware of their student organization activities and programs and provides signature authority on event approval forms.
  4. Encourages leadership development of organization’s members and are informed of various leadership opportunities across campus.
  5. Assists with organizational continuity and officer transition.
  6. Alerts student leaders of possible organizational problems and encourages them to explore a variety of strategies to solve such problems.
  7. Serves, where possible, as a liaison with faculty, staff, and the outside community.
  8. Encourages student leaders to critically examine the organization's structure and activities to ensure compliance with university regulations and to avoid any liability.
  9. Has annual meeting with the officers and members of the organization to clearly define the advisor’s role.
  10. Must attend a mandatory advisor orientation.
  11. Attend controversial or risky programs, activities, or meetings.
